Accra, March 7, GNA - The Organisation of Africa Trade Union Unity (OATUU) on Wednesday congratulated women all over the world and acknowledged their courage, determination and steadfastness in the world's socio-economic history.
A statement signed by Demba Diop, Acting Secretary-General of OATUU to mark International Women's Day, said the theme, "Generations of Women Moving History Forward for the celebration was a step in the right direction because it recognised women as significant partners in the events of the world.
It noted that although history had not been fair to women, their exhibition of wisdom, tenacity and immense contributions now and in the past were indications that the world could count on them to move history forward in the coming years.
The statement however noted with concern, the needed systematic changes that would enhance the empowerment of women politically, economically and socially and called for continued deliberations and conscientious efforts to help curb the socially constructed gender roles to promote gender balance through mainstreaming in all spheres of human endeavour.Institutions including government, employers and trade unions ought to take up the challenges of ensuring a more effective means of achieving equity goals in work places the statement said.It added that OATUU and all its 54 affiliates in Africa were faced with the burden of increasing informal economic activities were committed to promoting respect for human rights, including that of women workers.
The Day, it said, should spark new interests, ensure maximum promotion of the International Labour Standard and women's right for increased productivity and wealth creation, which would result in reduced poverty levels in a sustainable manner.The statement saluted women worldwide, especially those in Africa as they participated in the commemoration of women's history with keen interest of uncovering their forgotten heritage for a better future.
