MCE appeals to Assembly to streamline sponsorship of students

Tamale, Feb. 5, GNA - Mr Mohammed Amin Adam, Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive, has appealed to members of the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly to come out with an appropriate system to streamline the sponsorship of students in the metropolis.
"I think if a good system is put in place to ensure that only deserving students access the fund, it will reduce the huge financial burden on the Assembly.
"Last year alone, almost 400 million cedis was released to students at various levels and stages of education", he explained.
Mr Adam, who was addressing the first and second sessions of the Assembly in Tamale on Monday, said despite the huge sums spent on students, the Assembly was able to finance some educational projects.
These included the provision of 160 million-cedis to four new boarding secondary schools and the construction of a three-unit classroom block at Lahagu with funding from District Wide Assisted Programme (DWAP) at a cost of 393 million cedis.
Mr Adam said Kotingli and Sobria Primary Schools were currently benefiting from the school feeding programme and efforts had been made to include four more schools in the programme.
He announced that the Assembly had sponsored five community health nurses who had now completed their courses and been posted to health institutions in the metropolis, while nine more were still in school.
The MCE commended Members of Parliament for Tamale North, Tamale Central and Tamale South for spending 275 million cedis to desilt dams and dugouts in several communities in rural Tamale.
The three, Alhaji Abukari Sumani, MP for Tamale North, Mr Inusah Fuseini MP for Tamale Central and Mr Haruna Iddrisu, MP for Tamale South, also provided 120 million cedis to desilt roadside and storm drains in their various constituencies.
Each of them had spent several million of cedis to sponsor brilliant but needy students at various levels of education.
Mr Adam said the Tamale South and Tamale Central MPs had also spent 275 million cedis to provide school blocks, comprising three classrooms, office and store for the Dohini and Zogbeli communities.
