GES called to address academic disparities between public/private schools

Esaase (Ash), Feb 14, GNA - Parents and guardians of Esaase near Akropong in the Atwima-Nwabiagya District have appealed to the Ghana Education Service to institute measures that would address the academic disparities that exist between private and public schools.They said the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results indicate that the private basic schools perform better than most of the public schools.

The parents made the call at an education durbar organised by the Atwima-Nwabiagya District Education Directorate to inaugurate a 13-member local School Management Committee (SMC) at Esaase on Tuesday.The durbar was well attended by chiefs, parents, teachers, religious leaders, assembly and unit committee members and opinion leaders.The parents said public basic schools were adequately resourced with qualified teachers, textbooks, improved infrastructure and other facilities to enhance teaching and learning but regretted that the academic output was not satisfactory as compared with the private schools.
        They appealed to the government to adequately improve the service conditions of teachers to enable them perform satisfactorily.
      Nana Oppong Wadie II, Esaasehene, who presided, advised the SMC members to show selflessness, commitment and dedication to achieve the desired results. He said he was not happy about the low standard of education in the area and urged the SMC to identify problems that militate against the children's academic performance and find lasting solutions to them.
