Bicycles for schoolgirls in Nkwanta District

Nkwanta, April 3, GNA -The Nkwanta District Directorate of the Ghana
Education Service (GES) has distributed 148 bicycles to girls in basic
schools in the district to encourage them to remain in school. The
bikes, donated by UNICEF, went to girls who commute on foot from
distant villages to schools in towns.
Rev Ernest Gaewu, the Nkwanta District Education Officer, said a
UNICEF gender parity-index research showed that the gap between girls
and boys' enrolment in schools in the district was wide.

He said the distances travelled by girls from their home villages to
schools in the towns were identified as one of the inhibiting factors
to girls' enrolment in the district.Mr Gaewu said he hoped the
recipients would be motivated by the availability of a faster and less
hazardous means of getting to school to remain in school.
