Offinso (Ash), Feb 12, GNA - Some individuals, churches and organisations on Sunday contributed 60 million cedis as seed capital to support 30 grandaunts of the Nkenkasu and Offinso Training and Rehabilitation Centres for the Disabled at their 12th graduation at Offinso.
The Agricultural Development Bank contributed 10 million cedis, Rotary Club of Kumasi, five million cedis, Reverend Richard Toller of the Dundee Baptist Church in Holland, 1,000 dollars, and Dr Owusu Achaw Duah, the Member of Parliament for Offinso South and the Offinso District Assembly gave seven million and five million cedis respectively.The Ministry of Manpower, Youth and Employment presented 10 million cedis and some items worth 16 million cedis to the grandaunts.The items included seven hand sewing machines, nine rpt nine foot sewing machines and 10 pressing irons.
In a speech read for him the Minister of Manpower, Youth and Employment, Mr Boniface Abubakar Saddique, said so far 79,198 jobs have been created as a result of the NYEP.He expressed the hope that by 2007, 400,000 hobs would have been created to enable the youth contribute meaningfully towards the socio-economic development of the country.
Alhaji Saddique appealed to the people not to politicise the programme but offer constructive suggestions to help promote it.Dr Duah said it was the aim of the government to assist to train the disabled in vocational skills to enable them contribute positively towards the country's socio-economic development.He appealed to them to take advantage of the two training and rehabilitation centres in the district and enrol to help them acquire vocational skills to be self-employed.
Mr Augustine Charles Ntim, Offinso District Chief Executive, commended the effort and initiative of Mr Barima Antwi for establishing the two centres.He said the assembly would construct a dormitory block at Nkenkasu at the cost of over 900 million cedis to ease accommodation problem at the centre. Mr Barima Antwi, Director of the centres, said the centres established 12 years ago have been able to train 485 grandaunts who have actively been working in many organisations.
He extended gratitude to many donors including the Aktion Foundation of Fresdensdorf of Germany, Orion Foundation of Massland of Holland, Catholic Relief Services, Kristo Asafo Reformed Church and the Asare Farms for their support and contributions towards the development of the centres.He appealed to the government, the Administrator of GETFund and organisations to provide the centres with a bus to enhance their activities.Mr Antwi said the centres offer courses in tailoring, leatherwork, shoe making, carpentry, tie and dye and batik.
