Bekwai (Ash), Feb. 9, GNA- Nana Karikari Appau II, Paramount Chief of the Bekwai Traditional Area, has expressed concern about the increasing rate of bushfires in the area. He said the situation has caused considerable damage to many cocoa farms and food crops estimated at millions of cedis.
Nana Appua made the observation when Mr George Isaac Amoo, National Co-ordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), paid a courtesy call on him at Bekwai on Wednesday as part of his tour of Ashanti Region. The Paramount Chief appealed to NADMO to provide fire volunteer squads with incentives to motivate them to intensify their efforts in fire prevention. He, however, said fire fighting should not be the concern of only fire volunteer squads and called on all stakeholders to help prevent fires to help protect the environment and avoid the destruction of properties.Nana Appau gave the assurance that the Bekwai Traditional Council as part of its effort to check bushfires would mount educational programmes in all communities to sensitise the people on the need to avoid such disaster.
Mr Amoo said the new agenda of NADMO was to declare war against disasters in the country to ensure environmental protection. He said most disasters caused by bush and domestic fires could have been avoided to save lives and property, adding that NADMO was to intensify its educational programmes to check such practices.Mr Amoo said NADMO would support fire volunteer squads with incentive packages like torchlights, Wellington boots, cutlasses and others to motivate them to prevent fire out brakes. He urged communities to undertake tree-planting exercises to serve as windbreaks to rainstorms and to protect the environment.
